Alzheimer's Association International-China Committee (ADI-China) and Beijing AD Association of Prevention and Treatment as well as Beijing Anding Hospital have held "The Young Physician Academic Symposium” in the Technology Week in May 21, 2009 in the Beijing Anding Hospital.
More than 100 young doctors have attended the symposium to discuss how to better serve for AD patients and their families. Those attendants are from the Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Beijing Union Medical University, Academy of Military Medical Sciences, Beijing Xuanwu Hospital, Beijing University of Life Sciences, China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Huilongguan Hospital, Beijing Hospital of Aging, Chaoyang District, The Third Hospital of Dongcheng District Beijing, the Aging Hospital of Social Welfare Beijing, the Institute of the Psychology of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Music, Beijing Anding Hospital, the PLA Second Artillery General Hospital, Beijing Red Cross Hospital Welfare, Xinjiekou communities, North Sichuan Medical College, First Affiliated Hospital of Sichuan and the Beijing Hospital of Ministry of Health.
The symposium was started at 9:00am. Professor Xu Xianhao, vice president of ADI-China announced meeting starting and gave a welcome speech. He said that this symposium is a good chance to display talents and broaden knowledge for all of attendants. Young physicians at this symposium will talk about how to improve service for Alzheimer's patients at different aspects of service and clinical and research progress in AD field, with new concepts and new ideas. He hoped that young people will enjoy this wonderful time and learn more knowledge in the symposium.
The symposium had invited 3 professors and attending doctor to present professional scientific talks, including Professor Feng Tao, associate director of Physicians from the Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Professor Li Jin, vice director of the Institute of Drug Toxicology of the Military Hospital, Dr. Qi zhigang, an attending doctor from Department of Radiology of Capital University of Medical Sciences. The symposium had mainly discussed following topics, (1) Progress in the imaging technology for the diagnosis of AD; (2) biological markers for the diagnosis of AD; (3) the new approaches to drug design for AD; (4) AD prevention and control strategies for AD; (5) the non-drug therapy for AD and so on.
Dr. Feng Tao, a young vice director of physician from Beijing Tiantan Hospital presented a lecture entitled "Biological markers in early diagnosis of AD and clinical application." In his view, before AD clinical diagnosis, there are early changes of substances in brain tissue, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood. Pathological changes in AD are earlier than the onset of symptoms. It is difficult to make clinical diagnosis in the mild symptoms of AD in the early clinical stage. The biological markers can be used as indicators for early diagnosis or sub-clinical signs of pathological changes. Potential biological markers in the cerebrospinal fluid and plasma of number indicators have shown a promising prospect. By using imaging technology for the structure and function changes can detect biomarkers. Dr. Feng Tao indicated that application of biological markers will further improve the AD, MCI and other types of dementia diagnosis and treatment. Early diagnosis of AD is in favor of early treatment, and when AD patients in the clinical diagnosis have made and treatment given is very difficult, there is no truly effective drug, so that the timely use of biological markers found in AD and early treatment is very important for AD patients.
Professor Li Jin, vice director of the Institute of Toxicology of the Military Hospital presented a talk entitled "Anti-Alzheimer's drug research." He mainly introduced drug discovery basic theory and strategy for AD, including the AD epidemiology, AD clinical features, AD pathogenesis, Aβ hypothesis, tau protein modification hypothesis, APOE hypothesis, cholesterol hypothesis and drug labeling, marker and so on. He also talked about the status of drug therapy. The trend of anti-AD drugs, such as R & D focuses on the aspects.
Dr. Qi Zhigang, a young physician from Department of Radiology of Capital University of Medical Sciences, had focused on the progress of neuroimaging of AD diagnosis in his talk. He said that the reconstruction of magnetic resonance (MRI) scanning volume measurements of hippocampus and entorhinal cortex volume in the early AD patients is significantly help the early diagnosis of AD, especially for mild cognitive impairment. Application of magnetic resonance structure allows us to complete routing diagnosis for AD. However, MRI still has limitation for AD diagnosis since the atrophy of hippocampus is not specific only for AD. On the other hand, local gliosis lesions can lead to false-negative. The new biomarker using in MRI will help the diagnosis of AD. Image of AD is a useful technique, especially in MCI stage and it is a reliable non-invasive method of monitoring, follow-up after treatment is also important.
Participants have asked many questions and actively discussed above topics. They are mainly interesting in following aspects.
1. Both of AD patients and patient with elevated CSF pressure in the image can be displayed in the similar expanded ventricle, How to distinguish this two situations in their images?
Discussed answer: After releasing 50ml CSF, then taking coronal images of brain, this way can distinquish from AD image.
2. Are there different concentrations of Aβ40/Aβ42 peptides in AD and MCI patients? Can detect Aβ40/Aβ42 in the serum and urine?
Discussed answer: At present, Ad patients have lower Aβ40 / Aβ42 levels in serum than in MCI patients, but it is not clear how low. Detection in urine has not yet reported in China, the United States has already started research work in this area.
3. with the principle of target for new drug research, how to guide the direction of the research for young people.
Discussed answer: There are 2 directions to study of new drugs for AD. The first is in accordance with the mechanism of disease to develop drugs. The second way is to find the effective drugs, then the study drugs’ characters.
4, the default network (默认网络) and the deposition of Aβ protein in Alzheimer's overlap is important and valuable in diagnosis, what is the changes of clinical statistics.
Discussed answer: a few years ago, other country has report in this area which is considerable in the diagnosis of AD, but statistical significant is not clear.
At 1:30pm, the symposium was still continuing. Professor Wang Jun, vice chairman of ADI-China had hosted the symposium at afternoon. Several young physicians had presented their talks, they are from Beijing Hospital, Beijing Huilongguan Hospital, North Sichuan Medical Hospital, Beijing Institute of Music, University of Life Sciences and other units. There was a young worker who also had jointed the discussions.
Nu jihui, a vice director of physician, Australia returned from the Aging Hospital of Beijing Education College first presented her talk about non-pharmacological treatment of AD, which made a unique insight. Based on the current lack of truly effective drug treatment of AD, she has raised the importance of non-drug therapy. And she introduced a number of non-pharmacological treatment of specific measures. She spoke in a non-drug therapy, the use of restraint methods benefit patients, the disadvantages and complexity.
Dr. Zhang from Beijing Huilongguan Hospital indicated that clinicians should concern the real interests of patients to choose useful medicine for treatment. He focused on common drugs in the evidence-based medicine.
Dr. Sun xianrong, from Affiliated Hospital of North Sichuan Medical College has talked about the promotion of community workers to prevent AD. Her experience is to train medical staff, clinic and screen cases, establish Aging files.
Graduate student Zhen Ni from Graduate School of music therapy in Chinese Music Research, has talked about how to promote the prevention of AD. She said: Music therapy in Alzheimer's population have generally applied. Music therapy can enhance the language ability, to stimulate long and short-term memory, to promote social exchange, and enhance reality orientation, improving mood, promoting relaxation and tension aspects of anxiety, which has played a good roles in Alzheimer's treatment. Music Therapy in China will be the treatment of AD and will play an increasingly important role.
Dr. Tang Yan from University of Life Sciences talked about how Alzheimer's Association play a roles in the international activities, how to cooperate between international organizations to play an active role with the international community, in order to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the published opinion.
These young enthusiastic participants are active and fully demonstrated the vitality of young physicians and courage. Wang Jun, vice chairman of the Conference made a concluding statement. She said: "There are several characteristics of the academic symposium, including (1), the presentations by the experts mainly are from young people; (2) those young speakers are from all aspects of AD professional field; (3), all young people have prepared well and demonstrated well in their presentation. Also ask very interested questions and raised some important points for academic attention. Now in the world, many diseases are international, such as AD. AD has attracted global attention, and should not be used derogatory language of dementia for AD patients. Young physicians also need to care and love them. First of all, young doctors should take the lead! Try hard in research of AD and better serve patients. The future belongs to you "!
The Young Physician Academic Symposium in Technology Week in May 2009 had completed successfully. This symposium contained varies contents of academic topics. The most of attendants were young physicians from different aspects of AD field. This symposium had full filled a strong academic atmosphere and had promoted the young people in the professional field; reflects the courage to take responsibility of young people and shows the courage and confidence. The symposium has established good experience for the ADI-China in the future international academic activities.
